Eyeball
IMAGE COMING SOON
The eyeball is a small sphere which needs to be protected as it’s extremely delicate. The skull provides the strong framework to provide good protection. The 2 eyeballs are set inside bony sockets named the orbits which prevents the eyeballs from being knocked out.
Each eyeball is about 25mm across but the eye sockets are much larger to allow the muscles to fix the eye to the socket to occupy it. The eye muscles also help to allow movement of the eyes to be in different directions to see and be alert. There are 6 muscles in each socket:4 rectus and 2 oblique.
There are also other protectors of the eyeball. The eyelid and eyelashes help to keep dust and grit from entering the eye surface. This prevents the eye from being scratched or be irritated. While the eyebrow prevents sweat from directly dripping into the eye. The lacrimal glands under the eyelid in the outer corners of each eye constantly produces a clear, a little salty fluid known as tears that helps to keep the surface of the eye moist and clean. There is also a mild disinfectant to attack germs and protects from infection in the fluid.
